White blossoms in spring give way to small berries, which ripen to deep red, persisting on the tree into late fall.
Plant in full sun to part shade, with medium moisture, well-draining soils. A deep taproot makes them tolerant of drought, but difficult to transplant. Watch for suckers and seedlings. The bark and roots of sassafras have been used culinarily in the past, but the oils are now known to be toxic.
Don't trim oak trees from May 1st to September 30th because they may spread disease. Make sure the company you hire has the correct insurance (liability and workman's comp).
Keep in mind that health insurance isn't workman's comp when asking. Do not plant species of a tree that will grow to be over 12'' in diameter within 15 feet of the house. The most ideal time for fall planting somewhat depends on where one lives. At our latitude, trees and shrubs should be planted from September until the end of October to allow adequate time for good root development before the soil cools. This does not mean that trees or shrubs cannot be planted later.
